Our Mission

The Student Experience and Engagement division’s mission is to facilitate student success by providing student centered programs, facilities and services that promote educational, professional, and personal development.

We seek to help students:

  • Locate and receive the assistance they need to be academically and personally successful
  • Have a safe and supportive collegiate experience
  • Experience personal growth and develop a sense of personal responsibility
  • Acquire essential skills to thrive as emerging citizens and leaders
  • Understand their role and responsibilities within a larger community
  • Identify personal values, appreciate differences, and adapt to a diverse society

Meet the Provost    

Dr. Shari Bax has been Vice Provost for Student Experience and Engagement since 2012. Dr. Bax has a B.A. from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She joined the faculty at UCM in 1997. Dr. Bax is the advisor for the Student Government Association and the Sue Shear Fellows to the 21st Century Leadership Academy. She is also the campus coordinator for the American Democracy Project. Dr. Bax is co-advisor for the Breakers and joins the student group when it travels over Alternative Spring Break to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International. Dr. Shari Bax has been Vice Provost for Student Experience and Engagement since 2012. Dr. Bax has a B.A. from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She joined the faculty at UCM in 1997; and is a full professor in Political Science. Dr. Bax is the advisor for the Student Government Association and the Sue Shear Fellows to the 21st Century Leadership Academy. She is also the campus coordinator for the American Democracy Project. Dr. Bax is co-advisor for the Breakers and joins the student group when it travels over Alternative Spring Break to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International. As a faculty member, Dr. Bax advised several student organizations including serving as a chapter advisor for a sorority.  She regularly leads programs for student groups and residence halls. Dr. Bax has served on the Warrensburg Planning and Zoning Commission and currently serves on the Early Childhood Opportunity Center advisory committee. In 2001, she served as a member of the Missouri House Apportionment Commission. In her spare time Dr. Bax enjoys reading, cooking, scrapbooking, traveling and attending soccer games with her family.

Dr. Bowman is the Associate Vice Provost for Student Services and the Title IX Coordinator . Dr. Bowman has worked at UCM since 1996 in a variety of areas, including Residence Life, the Union, Facilities and Conference Services and Student Experience & Engagement. In his current role, Dr. Bowman's primary responsibilities are to serve and support students in crisis and assist them in overcoming obstacles. He oversees the campus judicial system, the Counseling Center, the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS), the University Health Center, the Office of Mentoring, Advocacy and Peer Support (MAPS), the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention (VSAP), childcare, Title IX Coordination, parent relations, the CARE Team and the Threat Management Team. He works closely with students, parents and faculty on campus issues and student appeals. Dr. Bowman earned his doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Missouri - Columbia. He also studied at Miami University in Ohio, where he received a master's degree in college student personnel services and a bachelor's degree in sociology. Dr. Bowman coordinates the Missouri Boys State and Missouri Girls State leadership programs on behalf of UCM.

Keri Busker started at UCM in March 2007. She is the receptionist and office professional for the Office of Student Experience and Engagement. She can answer your questions about:

  • Appeals
  • Sick/absences notices

In her free time, she enjoys her grandchildren, reading and exercising.

Gretchen began working in the Office of Student Experience and Engagement in 2004.  She is the Administrative Assistant to Dr. Shari Bax, Vice Provost for Student Experience and Engagement.  Gretchen can answer questions about:

  • Student Experience and Engagement budget
  • Student Experience and Engagement operational processes
  • Student related issues of all types including absences, withdrawals, etc.
  • Computerized data requests
  • Charno and Who’s Who at UCM
  • Bax’s schedule
In her spare time she enjoys her grandsons, traveling, attending concerts and sporting events and reading.
