Public Relations Minor

Learn how organizations and brands communicate effectively with public audiences through the University of Central Missouri’s minor in Public Relations. With classes available online or in person on our Warrensburg campus, this flexible, valuable minor complements many UCM degree programs. 

Our Public Relations minor builds on your existing skills in writing, critical thinking and critical reading and helps you acquire new knowledge in public relations strategies and problem solving. What you will study

Learn how to analyze and critique public relations programs, communication strategies and campaigns using the foundations of public relations. With our diverse curriculum, you’ll acquire an understanding of the ethical implications of PR — and the social responsibility that goes with it. In addition to core classes, you can choose approved public relations electives to tailor this minor to suit your needs.

  • Innovative Public Relations agency: Want the opportunity to work with clients on public-facing projects? Take two additional electives and join UCM’s student-operated agency to hone your skills and gain real-world experience.
  • Applied skills in entertainment PR: Further develop your writing, reading and critical-thinking skills as they pertain to specific public relations topics and strategies. Our applied skills classes in global sports, crisis communications and entertainment will help you develop practical skills through real-world learning scenarios. Work on site with public relations specialists and vice presidents of marketing at communications firms and entertainment venues. 
  • Applied skills in global sports: Learn the tools of the PR trade in the world of sports. An applied skills course in this area gives you the opportunity to interact with the head of marketing for a professional sports team in Missouri. Depending on your interests, we can help you secure a for-credit applied skills course where you’ll work alongside professionals in your dream job.
  • Professional development: Join the UCM chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) to network and gain insight into the field with peer events and regional conferences.
