Jerry Hughes, who dedicated more than 40 years to laying the foundation for successes that included regional and national athletics championships, improved sports playing facilities, and the recruitment of thousands of outstanding student-athletes at the University of Central Missouri, passed away late Saturday, Jan. 21, after a brief illness. Arrangements have not yet been announced.

On Monday, Feb. 6 KMOS-TV, the University of Central Missouri’s public television station, will move the beginning of its daytime ‘general audience’ programming from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will allow PBS Kids programming to run concurrently from 5 a.m. through 1 p.m., creating a better viewing experience for young viewers. In addition, KMOS will premiere a new series for children ages 3-6 designed to introduce kids to thinking concepts meant to help in solving everyday problems, and to express themselves clearly. “Work It Out Wombats!” will air weekdays at 9:30 a.m. beginning Feb. 6.

In his State of the State address presented from the Missouri House Chamber in Jefferson City today, Gov. Mike Parson announced his proposal for a balanced fiscal year 2024 budget that includes a 7 percent increase in core funding for the state’s public colleges and universities.

The University of Central Missouri’s dining services provider, Sodexo, is introducing UCM to its partner and national nonprofit, Swipe Out Hunger. In collaboration with the university’s Campus Cupboard, they have implemented a plan to assist UCM students battling food insecurity. Students can now apply to receive 10 free meal swipes to use at university dining halls.

UCM Magazine, a biannual publication with a print distribution to 25,000 University of Central Missouri alumni and supporters, is being recognized with a 2022 Best of District award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). A representative of the UCM Alumni Foundation will accept the award during the CASE District VI Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, Feb. 5–7.

Recognizing the quality of the education students receive to help them in career advancement, the University of Central Missouri’s Public Relations and Strategic Communications program has been named to the PRNews 2023-A-list. This is the second consecutive year UCM’s program has received this designation, making it the only such program offered at a public Missouri institution to be recognized, and one of only 50 programs nationwide to earn a spot on the list.
