Generation Study Abroad Scholarship Program

 

The Generation Study Abroad (GSA) Scholarship Program is intended for UCM students of various backgrounds to participate in an academic, internship, faculty-led, or service learning experience abroad. This scholarship is a part of IIE Generation Study Abroad's initiative to double and diversify the amount of US students studying abroad by 2019. Each year, twelve scholarship awards of $2500 will be awarded for any academic study abroad experience.

To qualify for the GSA Scholarship, a student must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Pell Grant eligible
  • First-generation college student
  • A member of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group in higher education

 

Each year, two recipients will be chosen from each of the following categories:

  • Students in each of UCM's academic colleges:
    • College of Education
    • College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences
    • College of Health, Science and Technology
    • Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies
  • A student member of TRIO
  • A Presidential recipient

 

Applicants are required to submit a 2-3 page essay, double spaced and in MLA format.

 

The Essay should answer the following questions:

  • What is your perception or opinion of study abroad?
  • How did you learn about this scholarship?
  • If you receive this scholarship, where would you like to study abroad and why?
  • How will a study abroad experience assist in your academic, career, and personal goals?

Applicants are also required to complete two recommendations. At least one recommendation must be completed by a professor. Both recommendations can be completed by professors. You have the option for one recommendation to be completed by someone other than a professor such as your boss or a coach.

Recommendations will be completed online during the application process. Recommenders will complete your recommendation using our online form.

The priority deadlines to apply is the same as the regular study abroad program application deadlines:

September 20th for spring semester programs

February 20th for summer and fall semester programs.

 

Recipients of the scholarship will be notified by the first week of the last month of the semester.
