Learn what it means to be a MULE

Held prior to the beginning of fall semesters, UCM Experience kickoff is a program designed to ease the transition to college for new Central Missouri students. During the program students will become acquainted with campus and attend sessions to increase their success at UCM, all while creating life-long friendships. Students participating in the program prior to the fall semester will have the opportunity to beat the move-in rush, watch a movie on the football field, learn about campus services and meet with the faculty of your department. Designed for Freshman Success

At the University of Central Missouri, we know the first year of college can be intimidating. That’s why we created The UCM Experience, a program to help you make an easy transition into your freshman year. Through the program you’ll learn about UCM traditions, campus culture, ways to create new friendships and about all of the helpful resources on campus.

If you are a freshman that is participating in band or on an athletic team, do not worry you will still be included in this program. Therefore, you will be able to do both!

Residential students participating in the kickoff will move in on Thursday, Aug 15 (9 a.m.- 1p.m.). Commuter students participating will join us later that day at 4 p.m. in the Student Recreation & Wellness Center. By registering for this weekend program, you are expected participate for the whole weekend. Attendance will be taken through the weekend.

  • Responsible and Active Learning
  • Money Management (financial aid and scholarships)
  • TechCheck (technology for students)
  • Academic Support Services
  • Engaged Learning/Community Involvement
  • Career Development (faculty involvement and advising)
  • Healthy Living

Current Immunizations are required for the kickoff event. These are the same immunizations required for enrollment as a UCM student.

Early Move-in

By participating in the UCM Experience Kickoff students are giving the privilege to move in early.  Upon arriving, you will be greeted by volunteers, who will help unload your vehicle to the curb while you go park to keep the area open for others to unload.  The volunteer will be not be able to help you move-in to the residence hall and many of the halls do not have elevators.


Participation is Key

When signing up for the UCM Experience Kickoff are you agreeing to participate in all planned activities for the three days.  These activities and sessions help you learn about campus, prepare you for your first day of classes and set you up for success.  Attendance is taken throughout the weekend and reported to the Office of Student Experience and Engagement.

Registration Deadline is August 5, 2019. By registering for this weekend program you are expected to participate. Activities start on Thursday, August 15 at 4 pm and conclude on Sunday, August 18.

Living on campus is a wonderful experience for college students, however the transition can be stressful. By registering you student(s) for the UCM Experience they are agreeing to participate in ALL activities associated with the Kickoff Weekend.

Mule Team Leaders (Upperclassmen)

The UCM Experience kickoff is an exciting program being held August 15-18. The purpose is to welcome all new students to University of Central Missouri and give them an opportunity to build a community with each other and transition to their new university home. Dedicated student leaders are needed to serve as Team Leaders to make this program a success. This leadership position is an excellent opportunity to get involved and welcome new students to Central Missouri’s campus.

Each Mule Team Leader will be assigned and responsible for about 25 new students during UCM Experience kickoff, whom they will guide and assist by introducing them to UCM.


Students selected for this position will be expected to:

  • Attend a leadership development session on Thursday March 7 from 5-8 pm and Tuesday, April 17 from 4-5 pm
  • Return to Warrensburg and check in during Mule Team Leader Training on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 & Wednesday. August 14, 2019
  • Be available to attend all programs and activities Thursday, August 15, 2019 through Wednesday, August 21, 2019
  • Participate in follow-up evaluations and provide feedback for future programs
  • Provide ideas, leadership, and ENTHUSIASM for this program!
  • Be a full-time undergraduate UCM student at the time of application and through Fall 2019
  • Have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average at time of application

There is no required commitment during the summer. By applying to be a Mule Team Leader for UCM Experience kickoff, you will only be making a brief commitment during the school year and August 13-21. Based upon demonstrated leadership during the UCM Experience, Mule Team Leaders will qualify for a scholarship up to $350 towards tuition and fees for the Fall semester. Recipient selection and notification of award will be made at the completion of the UCM Experience.

Interviews for Mule Team Leaders will take place February 27 & February 28 in a group interview format. Decisions will be made by March 5 . Individuals employed by housing (Community Advisor, Desk Manager, Office Assistant etc.) are not eligible for Mule Team Leaders due to training and work over lapping.

  • Participating in Convocation – Aug. 16 at 9 a.m.
  • Exploring Majors: Friday, August 16, 2019 from 10:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.

    This session will give faculty the opportunity to connect with new students in their academic college/department, help students explore ways to get involved in professional and social organizations in their area of interest, and boast about high impact learning experiences available at UCM.

  • Classroom Call to Action: Saturday, August 17th, 2019 at 9:00a.m.

    Teaching a Gen. Ed. class this fall? Here's your chance to explain the behaviors and habits that "dream" students display. Volunteer to present "Being a Responsible and Active Learner" on Saturday, August 17 from 9:00am-10:15am. You will work with a group of 25-50 first-year students to discuss the differences between high school and college, communicating with faculty, using the syllabus, and more. Training and suggested curriculum provided.
